American Hotel & Lodging Educational Foundation

Academic Scholarship Program

Fund your education and jumpstart your career...

Why get a loan when you could get a scholarship? There's no debt to repay, and it's more than just money. At the Foundation, they not only help pay for school -- they help build your career. The Scholars Alumni Association helps you network, advance, and gain visibility in the industry. And, when you win a scholarship, you also become a student member of the American Hotel & Lodging Association - for free. That puts you at the center of the industry, with all the info, events, and contacts you need to build a fast-track career in hospitality.

Don't think it's worth your time to apply? Sixty-four percent of the applicants won scholarships last year totaling more than $430,000. At 92 schools across the country, the AH&LEF awarded more than 300 scholarships ranging from $500 to $5,000. Take 30 minutes to apply. You could fund your education and jumpstart your career!

How are AH&LEF scholarships evaluated? I don't think I'm considered financially needy. Or, I don't have a high GPA. There's no "magic bullet" and you're not judged on one factor alone. Academics, hospitality work experience, financial need, extracurricular/professional activities and honors, as well as personal attributes, are all considered.

Which scholarship is right for you?
Explore all the options; click on the following links to learn about each of the scholarhips, including requirements. The Foundation administers nearly a dozen scholarships:

  1. Annual Scholarship Grant Program
  2. Arthur J. Packard Memorial Scholarship
  3. Hyatt Hotels Fund for Minority Lodging Management
  4. The Rama Scholarship for the American Dream
  5. Pepsi Scholarship
  6. The AAA Five Diamond Hospitality Scholarship
  7. American Express Scholarship
  8. Ecolab Scholarship
  9. Lodging Management Program
  10. The Steven Hymans Extended Stay Scholarship

Getting Nominated

School-Nominated
For the Annual Scholarship Grant Program, the Rama Scholarship, AAA Scholarship, and the Pepsi Scholarship, The Restaurant School selects the recipient. To apply for the Packard Scholarship, a representative at The Restaurant School must first nominate you.
See Mr. Richard Kopp or Mr. John Foglia about school-nominated scholarships for the AH&LEF.

Self-Nominated
You can apply directly for the Ecolab, Hymans Extended Stay, American Express, Hyatt Minority, and LMP scholarships. Your school does not have to be affiliated with AH&LEF and you do not need to be nominated.

Application Guidelines and Materials

Application Process
New this year, AH&LEF has combined all of its applications into one consolidated form. Now, students can complete one application and check all the scholarships they wish to be considered for. Students can apply online or download the application to their printer.

Application Deadline
May 1, 2007 is the deadline date for all AH&LEF scholarships. Applicants will be notified of their award status by July 15th. Check with Mr. Richard Kopp for details.

Application Instructions and Policies

  • All scholarships require enrollment in a U.S., undergraduate, hospitality-related degree granting program.
  • Full-time enrollment for all scholarships is defined as enrollment of 12 or more hours for both the upcoming fall and spring semesters. Part-time is considered less than 12 hours for one or both semesters; or full-time enrollment for fall semester only.
  • Open scholarship competitions do not require school nomination in order to be considered. School selected/nominated programs do require school nomination for consideration.
  • It's important that applicants complete all required sections of the application because they are scored on a combination of academic performance, hospitality work experience, financial need, extracurricular/professional attributes and honors, as well as personal attributes as defined in their career goal statement.
  • Students who receive an award are paid in two equal installments per academic year. The first check is mailed in September and the second in December. Checks are issued jointly to the student and the institution and must be endorsed by both. The scholarship checks and certificates or plaques are sent directly to the university. Scholarships must be used exclusively for the payment of tuition, fees, and books. Any remaining funds must be returned to AH&LEF. Any recipient who fails to enroll or cancels his/her enrollment must notify AH&LEF immediately.
  • Application Deadline: May 1. Winners announced by July 15.
  • Students may also apply online.
